This film is screened as part of a collaboration between the Normal Theater and Illinois State University's Honors Program. The Ethnogothic Film Series has been curated by Dr. Stanford Carpenter and Dr. Eric Wesselmann. A description of their course is below.
"Horror has always been a popular film genre cross-culturally. The reasons why people watch these films and what scares them varies by individual, as well as by sociopolitical and cultural contexts. For communities of color, horror films can provide a way to embody, engage, and potentially exorcise the pain of psychological trauma, both at the individual and intergenerational level. This generic approach, termed the EthnoGothic, has been gaining traction in both popular and academic discussions of horror films. This Exploration provides a space for students to view key films in this emerging genre as well as to consider perspectives of leading scholars who specialize in topics of horror, culture, race and identity."
